N2 - Modern Russian public perception of Korea demonstrates existence of the phenomenon which can be named as “North-Korea-first.” This means that when ordinary Russian people hear the word “Korea” their first idea is that the talk is about North Korea, not South Korea. This “North-Korea-first” phenomenon continues to exist notwithstanding active relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea and the spread of “Korean Wave” and growing popularity of Korean pop culture in Russia. The article tries to find out the routs of such misperception of Korea in Russia by a number of reasons such as: 1) prevailing of North Korean news over South Korean news in some Russian popular net resources; 2) possible interrelation between traditional Korean culture (widely propagated in Russia) and modern North Korea; 3) possible influence of older Russian generation’s perception of Korea as “North Korea” on younger generations.
