AreviewofhistoricalandrecentareaofdistributionoftubenosegobyProterorhinusmarmoratuswasundertakenusingcriticalanalysisofpublishedliterature,datafromtwolargefishcollections(NaturalHistoryMuseum,Kiev,Ukraine,andZoologicalInstitute,StPetersburg,Russia),personalcollectionsoftheauthorssampledduringextensivefieldactivitiesin1998–2004,andunpublishedreportsoftheInstituteofLakeandRiverFisheriesinVolgograd.Historic-ally,riverineP.marmoratusfromtheBlackSea–AzovbasinweredistributedintheupperreachesoftheriversDnieperandtheDonevenbeforetheconstructionofwaterretentionstructures;thisformatpresenthasdemonstratedonlylimitedupstreamrangeexpansion.Thenative-Caspiantubenosegoby-ismostlyconnectedwithseaanddeltahabitats.Weadducesomeargumentsforthetubenosegoby’srecentinvasionoftheMiddleandUpperVolgaasaresultofintroductionsoftheDon–AzovriverineformratherthanupstreamdispersaloftheCaspianmarineform.
