The transformation of the burial customs in the Protogeometric Athens is to be related to the ancient tradition concerning the coming of the Ionians. The newcomers constituted a new elite in Athens and introduced several new institutions. Burial customs of the newcomers, as well as their swords and their political and military institutions point to their European, especially Scandinavian, affiliation.
