Mahakala, one of the most prominent Dharma Defenders of Buddhist Tantra, has been transformed in some local branches of Chinese folksy beliefs into one of the important heavenly supervisors. This transformation lead to emergence of a new cult of the deity and appearance of very special local mythological traditions, sometimes, strictly isolated and having no connections with legends of other areas.
