Experiments reveal that two compression waves are excited when high-power pulsed electron beams initiated by an explosive-type field-emission cathode interact with a solid. The time interval between the appearance of the two waves depends on the plasma velocity in the vacuum gap. The superposition of the waves depends in a complicated way on the parameters of the electron beam, the target, and the plasma. A longitudinal component of the dynamic stress caused by the thermal shock from the plasma is detected and measured.
