Infrared studies of12C16O,13C16O and12C18O adsorption at 60-300 K on thermally activated CaO and MgO indicate that the CO interaction with O2- ions yields CO22- ions. These ions are the intermediates of more complex surface compounds and are responsible for the CO isotope exchange with surface oxygen. © 1987 Akadémiai Kiadó.
