Our goal in this chapter is to describe the main typologically common patterns of case syncretism in the Balkan languages and dialects and to show the variation within the language varieties in which the processes of case reduction and merger are ongoing. To do that, we consider the mergers of nominative and accusative with each other, as well as the presence or absence of their formal distinction from the non-core cases.
