Wars, as is known, have always been a powerful accelerator of political and social changes, with often unpredictable effects at the beginning of war conflicts. This has been the case on many occasions in the past. Effective recent examples are represented by the two world wars, the break-up of Yugoslavia, the terrorist attack of 11 September 2001 and the uprisings in the Arab countries of 2011. Russian-Ukraine military conflict constitutes one of these moments, able to trigger profound changes to existing internal and international balances, both at a European and global level. And, in fact, repercussions are already being felt in the energy field, in the economic-commercial sector, in the financial and monetary system, as well as in the perception of security.
As regards the future geometries of Europe, which are the main issue to be investigated in this chapter, the unpredictability of the changes underway, conditioned by the evolution of the military conflict and the risk of the involvement of third parties, leads us to reflect on the potential developments of the processes of European enlargement and integration, taking into account a plurality of variables that could dramatically alter the structures gradually established since the time of the Treaties of Rome in 1957.
