Silicate iron compounds predominate in soils on local calcareous moraines in Leningrad Oblast, while soils on red moraines contain a large amount of crystallized compounds. The soils have a low magnetic susceptibility, which increases with decreasing clay content, suggesting that clay minerals render magnetite and maghemite amorphous. The soils contain little lepidocrocite, primarily in the clay fraction from the middle of the profile. There is a close relation between hematite and clay minerals in clay-loam soil on the red moraine, where hematite amounts to 40 percent of total iron. There is more goethite in samples of soil clay with a low content of clay minerals of the red moraine.
