A microscopic description is given of the mechanism of first-order magnetic phase transitions in the framework of the periodic Anderson model for topologically ordered materials. A criterion is found for the appearance of a magnetic moment which, in the limit ΔM→0, becomes the Stoner criterion. The energy of the magnetically ordered state is calculated, and the condition for it to be a minimum at T=0 determines the stability of the phase.
