Natural gas hydrates as a potential fossil fuel has become the focus on increased interest. However, the economic use of hydrates remains an unanswered question, due to insufficient knowledge and research. A discussion covers observational data on gas hydrates; global estimates of methane content in submarine gas hydrates; and approaches for gas recovery from gas hydrates.
