Gahnite is reported from the Graskevardo and Ripudden deposits in NW Sweden. Together with known occurrences in the Norwegian Caledonides, these localities form a consistent pattern relative to tectonostratigraphy, metamorphic grade, and type of host rock. Although several different mechanisms of formation appear to be responsible for gahnite, the critical factors are metamorphic grade and host-rock chemistry. The gahnite is clear to deep green in section, occurs as 0.1-1 mm grains and amounts to = or <5%; it is often intergrown with magnetite, quartz, anthophyllite or chlorite. -R.A.H.
