The positions of hydroxyl protons in 2:1 layers of chlorites and micas are mainly determined by electrostatics. For the hydroxyls of dickite, amesite and the brucite sheets of chlorite, systematically different results are given by the two methods. Causes and implications of these results are discussed.-D.F.B.
