Ground-based multi-instrument and geosynchronous particle observations have been used to study an episode, where a sequence of pseudo-breakups and substorms was observed on the ground. It was found that pseudobreakups were associated with the same characteristics as substorm onsets, so we suggest that they were produced by the same physical mechanism in the magnetosphere. Substorms are defined here as intensifications of aurora and ionospheric currents that have a significant poleward expansion (> 2° lat). Estimates have been made of the MLT extensions of injection source regions and substorm current wedge locations and they were shown to be in reasonable agreement.
