N2 - The discovery of numerous bacterial remains (including those morphologically similar to modern ironbacteria) in the lower Proterozoic red-colored quartzites of Shoksha, Karelia, and Bolshoy Tyuters Island of the Gulf of Finland, indicates a significant role of bacterial communities in the formation of hematite pigment in the studied rocks.
