The paper is largely based on our recent fieldwork conducted in Vologda province (oblast’) in the Russian North. I selected some examples of stories about wizards that could be of use in this context - stories about their reputation and their practices. One of the magic practices appeared to me so interesting, in respect of the social role of a wizard in the village community, that I decided to limit myself to its description
