The progress of astronomical researches performed within the St. Petersburg University since its foundation is reviewed. The topics of the works of University astronomers in the 18th-19th centuries are briefly described and their main achievements are highlighted. The most important studies made in various fields of astronomy in the University in 20th century are outlined. An accent is made on the mathematical aspects.
