The article discusses the key prerequisites for the formation of the post-totalitarian culture of West German society. How Allied policy influenced the formation of post-totalitarian culture. The authors trace the influence of the policy of denazification and democratization of the victorious countries on the development of German culture proper, which reflects the new socio-economic and political realities. In particular, the influence of denazification on the content of German literature and journalism is investigated. At the same time, there is an increase in the popularity of nationalist ideas due to the backlash against denazification. It manifested itself in the activities of “völkisch-nationalist” writers who promoted the idea of uniting Europe around a racially oriented Germany. Europe united on an anti-communist basis made it possible to preserve European culture, to which Germany made a significant contribution. In general, it is asserted about a high degree of politicization of post-war literature in the western zones of Germany, which in its intensity surpassed the German literature of past times. The article also examines the impact of the policy of “re-education” and democratization on the consolidation of the values of liberal democracy; The main direction of this policy is determined — the training of the German elites, which was carried out on the basis of the “knowledge through learning” approach. The formation of a renewed atmosphere in society was facilitated by student exchange programs, the spread of American literature, music, fashion, cinema and radio. The authors note the mass nature of public libraries, which reflected the essence of a free society and the American philosophy of freedom — “to learn, study and seek the truth.” In conclusion, it is argued that the dissemination of the values of liberal democracies through education, literature, radio, music, cinema, and periodicals played a role in the formation of a new West German culture, despite the continued popularity of right-wing radical ideas among certain categories of the population. In this context, attempts to impose a foreign, especially American, culture on Germans were seen as a continuation of a long-standing British and American policy of weakening Germany.
