abstract = "The paper examines the topic-constructions in the French and Portuguese versions of the XIII century prose romance “The Queste of the Holy Grail”. The functioning of the topic-constructions is generally believed to be intrinsically linked to the word order. Hence, the purpose of the present research is to contrast topic marking strategies in the Old French and Old/Middle Portuguese, two related languages with quite similar syntactic properties, namely, the tendency towards the V2-word order. The analysis is based on the bi-partial classification of topic-constructions which consists of the left-dislocation and the topicalization, being the presence or the absence of the resumptive element the main criterion to tell apart one from another. The comparison revealed some common tendencies as well as some noticeable differences in the functioning of the topic marking constructions. In both texts the presence of a relative clause is a strong trigger for the left dislocation. As for the cognitive types of topics, the Given Topic always favours topicalization. At the same time, while in the Old French text the left dislocation is almost incompatible with the Given Topic, in the Portuguese version it is rather tolerant to it. Moreover, in the French novel there is a strict differentiation of the syntactic functions of topics: subject in case of the left dislocation, objects in case of the topicalization. In the Portuguese text both constructions equally mark all the possible syntactic functions. Portuguese examples of both constructions are generally more diversified as there are left dislocations without relative clauses, topicalizations with Romance inversion (and not only the German one, as in the French novel) and even without inversion, i.e. OSV, not founded in the French text.",
