Background.The research is aimed at studying the observer's characteristics related to the accuracy of perception of the relationship in a couple using non-verbal communication based on video materials. The study examined the pair relationship between a man and a woman who are in a friendly and loving relationship, as well as in a dating situation. Based on the observed non-verbal signs, the respondents (N = 70, age M = 23, σ ± 4) justified their conclusions. Purpose.The study of the observer's characteristics related to the accuracy of perception of the relationship in a couple (love or friendship, dating relationship) with the opposite sex through non-verbal communication. Materials and methods.The work used the author's development of stimulating video material to determine the ability of people to distinguish romantic relationships from friendly ones using non-verbal signals (9 video clips); Emotional Empathic Tendency Scale, EETS to A. Mehrabian, N. Epstein; scales (tasks) of V.A. Labunskaya's methodology "Diagnosis of the level of development of the ability to adequately interpret nonverbal behavior" (tasks-1, 2,3,4), author's form to identify attitudes to friendship of different sexes. The received data was processed in IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription 22. The following methods of mathematical statistics were used in the study: Pearson Chi-square, Multivariate Analysis of Variance, as well as content analysis. Results.It has been revealed that the accuracy of perception is related to the personal boundaries of acceptable non-verbal communication of the perceiver, the ability to adequately interpret non-verbal behavior, perceptions and experience of friendly relations with the opposite sex. It has been revealed that non-verbal signals that have multiple interpretations (look, smile, touch “cover your mouth with your hand”) make it difficult to determine the type of relationship between people.
