The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the vocabulary of the thematic group “evening youth meetings” in the Russian dialects of the Simbirsk Volga region. The material for this work is taken from recordings of stories by informants from villages in the Ulyanovsk region. Some of these recordings were collected by the author, the other part was published by folklore researchers. The selected lexemes were divided into the following thematic groups: names of locations (rooms) for youth meetings, names of evening youth meetings, names of activities and entertainment at gatherings, evaluative vocabulary characterizing the qualities of a girl, a guy, and the vocabulary of a love relationship. When analyzing the vocabulary in each of the groups, the author used an ethnolinguistic approach, as well as examined the material in functional, areal and etymological aspects. The study of the vocabulary of the thematic group “Evening youth meetings” in the Russian dialects of the Simbirsk Volga region demonstrates the all-Russian traditions of youth gatherings, and we also identified specific regional features of the Middle Volga region. These features are reflected in the corresponding vocabulary: kelya ‘hut’, kildim ‘meeting’, podval ‘shack’, pesnyachitʼ ‘to sing loudly’, vrotovuyu ‘using the mouth’. There has been also identified some narrow-local dialect words, which reveal the customs of separate zones, for example, a specific expression for the Sura region zasizhivatʼ v kelye to ‘start gatherings’; this expression contrasts the beginning of get-togethers with the main period of full-fledged gatherings with joint overnight stays in huts, that is korennoye sidenʼye.
