he article analyses specific features of language interpretation of Russian postwar painting in Anglophone art discourse and reveals the significance of historical and sociocultural knowledge of an expert for evaluation of an artwork. The mechanism of aesthetic empathy is considered as one of the most important cognitive mechanisms in sense formation in the art discourse, which brings about the understanding of values transferred by an artist.
