N2 - The recent historical research could greatly benefit from the use of methodological tools borrowed from other social sciences. One of those tools is the Grounded Theory methodology, widely used in sociological research. The article provides an overview of the development of this methodology, as well as description of the research process in accordance with the principles of the "classical school" of Grounded Theory. The experience of applying this methodology in the study of international relations is taken into close consideration as especially illustrative. Grounded Theory was used there to reconstruct the ideas and views of collective actors. The conclusion is that the methodology of Grounded Theory could be successfully used in historical science, particularly in the study of social processes. In addition, some tools from the “toolbox” of this methodology may be used in the framework of alternative approaches to cover a significantly broader range of research questions.
