abstract = "Continuing the policy of his father Yaroslav Vsevolodovich, Alexander Nevsky was ready to accept obedience to the Roman Church and recognize the power of the Pope in church affairs. Both princes were strongly influenced by the foreign policy of the Mongols, implemented in relation to the Latin West. Under the threat of a new invasion, the Mongols sought to impose peace agreements on the Pope and other rulers of the West on their own terms, using Rus princes and hierarchs as intermediaries. Persuading the Pope to obey the khan, the Mongols promised not only preservation of his power over the Latin Christians, but also subordination of Eastern Christians, primarily those of them who were already under the rule of the conquerors. In response, Pope Innocent IV tried to create an anti-Mongol coalition with participation of Rus princes, clearly overestimating the degree of their political independence in relations with the Mongols. Having evaded preparation for the war against the West, declared by Guyuk Khan, Alexander was forced to participate in the diplomatic expansion of the Mongols. A change in the priorities of the conquering policy of the Mongol Empire that occurred soon led to the termination of Alexander's contacts with the papacy.",
