Somewhat surprisingly, academic research and analytical studies are rather limited regarding the role played by Italy during both the Yugoslav succession wars and, later, the process which is potentially paving the way to the EU integration of South East Europe, Albania included. However, Italy did play a key role in certain important moments and has promoted a regional strategy that was later adopted, in its essence, by the EU. This chapter investigates, therefore, the main trajectories of the Italian Foreign Policy in South East Europe. A special focus will be paid to multilateral and bilateral commitments spent in support of the stabilization of the Yugoslav cultural space and Albania, both in the 1990s and after the new millennium, when macroregional policies have been established. Despite uncertainties and inconsistencies, suffered by both players over time and reported in the scrutiny, this chapter confirms that intersections between the Italian foreign policy and the EU approaches do represent a continuity factor in the complexity of their relations with SEE.
