Development of oil fields in Japan started at the end of ХIХ century. At that time coal played the main role in energy consumption of Japan and other countries. However structural changes in the economy caused the shift to an oil-based economy by the middle of the XX century. The availability of foreign energy resources has become an important factor of Japan’s economic development due to limited domestic oil reserves. The article focuses on the role of oil in the Japanese economy, as well as national energy strategy in conditions of world oil market transformation.
