The article based of an array of unpublished documents, deposited in the fund of the Office of the Holy Synod of the Russian State Historical Archive (St. Petersburg) and not yet introduced into scientific circulation, considers an initiative of a group of Slavic Uniate immigrants in the United States, led by the priest Father Alexey Toth. Special attention is given to the subsequent reaction of the Russian church bureaucracy. The work also examines the nature of the information on this subject coming into the Holy Governing Synod. The documents put into scientific circulation allowed for the first time to reconstruct the events of the time period between January of 1891 and June of 1892. The authors come to a conclusion about the importance of these events for the understanding of the specificity of the whole process of Uniates' transition to Orthodoxy in the 1890-s and for assessment of the historical significance of the spiritual endeavor of Father Alexey Toth.
