The tradition of male labour migrations has existed for centuries in the Balkans. Migration to a neighbouring region, a big city or another country and contacts with speakers of different languages has had a significant impact on the degree of bi- and multilingualism and language contact effects in the Balkan communities. Here we consider the participation of all or at least a part of speakers in the ABLA language communities in such traditional mobility, nowadays or in the recent past.
