N2 - Abstract: Calcium carbide can be used for in situ generation of acetylene. This communication presents the synthetic approach to 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-1H-4,7-methanoinden-1-one involving calcium carbide, norbornene, and dicobalt octacarbonyl. The latter acts both as a catalyst and a source of CO for the construction of the cyclopentenone ring.
