The functioning of the Russian language on the territory of modern Ukraine deserves a deep and at the same time objective and unbiased description. This issue requires both a linguistic and a sociolinguistic approach, taking into account the regional heterogeneity of the language situation that has developed over many centuries in Central and Eastern Ukraine. This article contains as an illustration empirical linguistic and factual material collected by the team of the Slavic scholars in the course of the field research in Ukraine in 2018.
