The possibility of identifying the epidural space in anesthesiological practice was discussed using optical methods. The existing technique for carrying out epidural anesthesia was presented. The methods developed for verifying the epidural space were based on fiber optics. The measurements were made by means of standard springs and by converting the linear displacements of the body and the piston to electrical signals.
