The annual conference in memoriam of Ekaterina Alexeevna Galkina — the “IX Galkina’s Readings” (Proceedings…, 2018) took place in the Komarov Botanical Institute of the RAS on February 5–7, 2018. It was dedicated to the World Wetlands Day. The conference was organized by the Mire section of the Russian Botanical Society. The conference is held since 2007; the number of participants and as well as given presentations rises every year. In 2018 the conference lasted three days; altogether 80 participants from 37 organizations including the universities, several institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, nature reserves and national parks. 54 oral and poster presentations were given. This time geography of participants became wider; the conference united the colleagues from Arkhangelsk up to Khabarovsk, the foreign researchers from Estonia, Finland, Germany and Kazakhstan gave the talks for the first time. The questions of natural and anthropogenic dynamics of mires, their typology, synthaxonomy and flora of mires of poorly studied territories were discussed. Some presentations were focused on methodology of investigation of mire ecosystems, composition and structure of peat deposits. Results of paleoecology studies based on paleobotanic and palynologic methods using radiocarbon data were reported. Few reports demonstrated the results of mire restoration after rewetting. The new monography “Mires and peatlands of Europe” was presented. The participants discussed the idea of writing a book devoted to the Russian mires.
