Surface properties of alumina modified by silica and silica modified with alumina layers deposited by the technique of atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) were studied by low-temperature IR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO. Modification affects in different ways the concentration of strong and weak Lewis acid sites and results in the appearance of new acidic hydroxyls that are not characteristic of pure oxides.
