Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to detect amorphous phases (particle size < 8 nm) between the crystal phases formed at different stages of structural-chemical transformations of α-Fe2O3 in the course of transport reduction. The sequence of phase transformations in the reduction of α-Fe2O3 to metallic iron at temperatures above and below the wustite stability point (∼570°C) was established. The reduction in the wustite stability region gives rise to two phases: Fe1-xO and FeO, the stoichiometric phase formed first. At 570-600°C, the reduction of magnetite to wustite occurs by the zone mechanism, and the sample simultaneously comprises three phases: Fe3O4, FeO, and Fe.
