Specific features of self-organization of small groups and their directed formation are studied. The notion of the group code is taken as the basis for explanation of these processes. Self-organization is considered as the process of natural translation of a group code, and group formation as the process of controlled selection. Simplest models of self-organization of business and leisure-time groups and small groups in a large collective are given. The problem of sport team formation is considered.
