From 1924 to 1945, the Russian artist M.F. Domrachev lived in Harbin, Shanghai, Hangzhou and other places in China. He worked as a Scenic designer in Harbin and Shanghai, and later served as a pattern professor at the National Hangzhou Art Institute due to his life. During this period, he still maintained a strong interest in traditional Chinese architectural culture. This paper combines relevant documents from China and Russia for the first time, restores Domrachev’s artistic creation and teaching achievements in China, and reveals his multiple identities as immigrant artist, pattern educator, scenic designer and architectural researcher.
