Recognition of visual signals in the presence of noises was studied in cats before and after ablation of the visual fields of the cerebral cortex. The results showed that the animals are capable of recognizing visual images in noise in the range of signal to noise ratios from 13 to 0.95. Partial lesion of fields 17, 18 and 19 in both hemispheres of the animals, preliminarily taught to recognize visual signals, did not produce any significant changes in the recognition level. After the operation the critical signal to noise ratio at which the animals ceased to recognize the signals remained unchanged. A preliminary ablation of the fields in both hemispheres in naive animals did not reveal any differences in the dynamics of elaboration and the criterion of recognition as compared with intact cats. Hence, ablation of associative visual fields or of the striate cortex fields does not affect the level of visual recognition of images in cats during exposure to noise.
