N2 - 1. The rate of replacement of silanol groups by chlorine atoms depends on the pore size under the conditions used in these experiments. 2. The number of silanol groups replaced by chlorine per unit surface area is determined by the size of the silica pores, and does not depend on the type of silica. 3. The replacement of chlorine atoms by butyl or octyl radicals is quantitative under our experimental conditions.
