A general scheme of the quantitative estimation of readability is outlined. Methodics and results of determining the dependence of the readability indices (accuracy and time needed for solving problems) on such factors as the length of a cartographic scale, dispersion of signs and the background complexity are described. The results of the research led to a non-trivial conclusion: it is necessary to take into account the signs distribution in estimating a map's readability. -English summary
