The results of studies into the applicability of the optoacoustic effect for nondestructive examination of materials and articles, are discussed. The schematic diagram of the experimental facility used is given. The neodymium glass laser was used for acoustic signal excitation. The acoustic pulse detection was realized using the laser Michelson interferometer or the piezoelectric transducer. The samples of copper M1RO, duraluminium D16 and iron 0.3ZhR were tested. The experiments have shown not only the high sensitivity of the pulsed optoacoustic method towards structural changes in materials, but the real capability for creating the reliable contactless method for determination of the materials strength characteristics.
