The clustering of rare-earth cations (RE) in the heavily doped flourite-type solid solutions are discussed in a scope of the close relations between the cationic frameworks of CaF₂- and REF₃-type structures. The REF₃ clusters in the flourite solid solutions are shown to be the structure units of the neighboring individual phase nearest to the fluorite phase in the phase diagram.
