The clustering of rare-earth cations (RE) in the heavily doped flourite-type solid solutions are discussed in a scope of the close relations between the cationic frameworks of CaF2- and REF3-type structures. The REF3 clusters in the flourite solid solutions are shown to be the structure units of the neighboring individual phase nearest to the fluorite phase in the phase diagram.
