A theoretical model has been suggested for an electric charge loss of a charged droplet evaporing in the atmosphere of an inert gas. The model is characterized by taking into account the presence of metastable inert gas atoms. On colliding with those metastable atoms, the vapour molecules can undergo ionization (so-called Penning ionization). The subsequent capturing by a droplets of predominantly opposite sign results in the droplet discharge.
