The article makes a case for the anthropocentric approach to verbal meaning, providing a critical review of two dictionary definitions of never based on the denotational view of verbal semantics. The analysis demonstrates how shifting the focus in identifying the meaning structure of never in context from denotation to its emotional content allows to establish a more consistent model of how never is used in English and to improve the quality of dictionary entries.
