The principles governing the anion function of membranes relying on neutral complexing agents are discussed. The anion function of such membranes can originate from a compensation of transport energy effects of the interacting cation and complexing agent in the membrane. The possible association of anions and cationic complexes does not alter the physical nature of the phenomenon discussed.
