An endothermic effect is observed in the As2Te3 melt at the temperature of the semiconductor-metal transition. The amount of absorbed heat is equal to 6 cal/g. The effect is discussed within the framework of smeared phase transitions. The semiconductor-metal transition should be referred to as a smeared first-order phase transition with the regions of cooperative structural transformations involving several dozens of atoms.
