The research focuses on Latin America’s involvement and self-presentation in the so-perceived multipolar world of the twenty-first century as configured by the philosophy and formats of regional integration. Analyzing the historical dynamics of the most important regional groupings, their ideas and attitudes toward global processes and the very concept of a multipolar world, the authors identify a number of strategies for the international positioning of integration blocs. These are (a) strategy of anti-hegemonism, built around ALBA and based on anti-American and illiberal version of multipolarity, (b) strategy of continentalism to be strengthened, that presumes to consolidate a collective “voice” of Latin or South America in a fragmented world and relies on giving impetus to Community of Latin American and Caribbean Nations (CELAC) and idea of reviving UNASUR, (c) strategy of diversifying ties, a model of which is Pacific Alliance and its logic of geopolitical neutralism and combining of various external economic partnerships in highly pragmatic style. The authors state that integration itself either does not provide a (sub)regionally consolidated vision of multipolarity, being it not somehow related to the projections of external actors toward Latin America or cannot ensure its consistent implementation by regional actors within the international context. The general conclusion is that integration creates conditions for the nations to adapt to the structural constraints of the current international system, rather than serving as a “pillar” for Latin America’s becoming a solid and self-sustained “center of power”.
