Ethyl groups bound to the Si(100)-2×1 surface after dissociation of iodoethane were vibrationally assigned. The hydrogen-containing surface species formed as a result of hydrogen elimination in these alkyls were analyzed. It was found that kinetics drive the formation of these species.
