An approach that describes the spectral line shapes produced by pair collisions of multicharged ions with specific emphasis on the perpendicular Ly-α transitions is presented. The approach takes into account the interaction of the initial and final diabatic states due to exchange interaction of the initial and final diabatic states due to exchange interaction in a nonperturbative way. The results obtained are immediately applicable to the profile shapes produced in collisions. Specifically, exchange interaction results in the formation of two satellites perpendicularly polarized.
