Spatial distributions of planetary wave amplitudes are calculated for 10-day intervals before, during, and after an SSW event. In this study we analyze stationary planetary wave modes with zonal wave numbers m = 1 - 4 and eastward and westward propagating normal atmospheric modes having m = 1 and m = 2 with periods 5, 10, 16 and 4, 7 days, respectively. Amplitudes of stationary planetary waves for the westward QBO phase increase during the SSW and decrease after the event. For the eastward QBO phase, the amplitudes increase before SSW and decrease during the event in the northern hemisphere. These changes can stimulate corresponding changes in the mean flow and temperature fields forming SSWs in the middle atmosphere.
