Halobismuthates with 3-iodopyridinium cations: Halogen bonding-assisted crystal packing

Reactions of 3-iodopyridine with [BiX ₆ ] ³⁻ solutions in HX (X = Cl, Br) results in chloro- and bromobismuthate complexes (3-IPyH) ₂ {[BiCl ₅ ]}·H ₂ O (1) and (3-IPyH) ₄ [Bi ₂ Br ₁₀ ]·2H ₂ O. In both cases, halogen⋯halogen contacts play important role in formation of crystal packing; energies of these interactions were estimated by theoretical methods.
